I try to avoid news headlines (negativity doesn’t serve me!), however, when something pops up about health or pharmaceuticals, it always piques my interest.

The most recent pharmaceutical horror story has raised concerns about severe side effects linked to Metformin - one of the most widely prescribed medications for Type 2 diabetes worldwide.

The risks of Metformin

Metformin helps lower blood sugar by:

  • Reducing glucose production in the liver

  • Improving insulin sensitivity

  • Helping cells use glucose efficiently

Although considered ‘safe and effective,’ (where have we heard that before….), Metformin often affects the digestive system. Frequently reported reactions include nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, reduced appetite and a metallic taste in the mouth. Health guidance recommends taking it with meals to reduce these symptoms.

Long-term use, particularly at higher doses, has been linked to vitamin B12 deficiency.

Severe complications are uncommon but require urgent medical attention. These include lactic acidosis, a rare condition involving breathing difficulties, weakness and feeling unusually cold. Liver problems and severe allergic reactions may also occur.

By their own admission, Metformin is not suitable for everyone, particularly people with significant kidney or liver disease or heavy alcohol use.

While it can be life-changing for some, it doesn’t address why blood sugar became imbalanced in the first place.

The risks of diabetes

Chronically high blood sugar can silently damage:

  • Blood vessels

  • Nerves

  • Kidneys

  • Eyes

  • Heart

This increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, kidney failure, and vision loss.

The goal is not only lowering glucose - it’s restoring balance.

How the body responds to insulin

When you eat carbs, they break down into glucose and enter the bloodstream. Insulin acts like a key, opening the cells to let glucose in for energy.

When cells stop responding effectively (insulin resistance), the pancreas produces more insulin, and blood sugar starts climbing.

The body is not failing - it’s adapting to overload.

Homeopathy & blood sugar support

Homeopathy works by addressing the individual pattern behind blood sugar imbalance: supporting the whole system, not just the numbers. Some remedies commonly considered include:

  • Lycopodium – for sugar cravings, digestive imbalance, and liver support

  • Phosphoric acid – for fatigue, mental dullness, and stress-related sugar issues
