The real reason Homeopaths prescribe so differently
Why do some homeopaths say, “one dose and check back in a month” while others say, “take a 200c daily for three weeks”?
I hear this question so often. If you have ever worked with more than one Homeopath you will know the instructions can look totally different. One person tells you to take a single dose and wait. Another gives you a daily 200c for three weeks. And you are left wondering if someone is doing it wrong.
The truth is that Homeopathy has different prescribing styles. Practitioners follow the approach that aligns with their training, philosophy and what they see working in their clinics. It does not mean one is right and the other wrong. It just means there is nuance.
Here is a simple way to understand it.
Classical Homeopathy tends to be minimal
Traditionally, Homeopaths were taught to give one dose of the best matched remedy and let the vital force do the rest. The practitioner watches for the natural healing curve to unfold without interference. This is why you will often be told to check back in a month. The idea is to avoid overdoing it and to respect the body’s own timing.
This approach works beautifully for people who are sensitive, reactive or dealing with long standing constitutional patterns. It is gentle and patient.
Other Homeopaths lean into gentle repetition
You will also meet Homeopaths who prescribe more frequent dosing. Daily, every second day, weekly, or a structured three-week cycle. This is often used when someone is in a dense chronic state, overwhelmed by stress, or constantly being knocked off balance by life, hormones, emotional load, or physical trauma.
Repeat dosing can support people with low vitality or deep-seated patterns that need ongoing encouragement to shift.
And here is something important that did not exist in Hahnemann’s day
Our environment is not what it was in the 1800s. Today the body has to navigate:
• pollutants in the air and water
• chemically treated foods and soil depletion
• preservatives, additives and allergens hidden in everyday products
• ongoing medication use
• multiple vaccines over a lifetime
• heavy metals
• chronic stress and overstimulation
• endocrine disruptors
• EMFs and constant digital exposure
All of this places extra load on the vital force. Many people simply do not have the clean, robust baseline that Hahnemann’s patients had. Because of this, some modern Homeopaths use more frequent repetition to keep the healing signal consistent and help the system stay on track, especially when life keeps pulling it off centre.
It is not that single-dose prescribing is outdated. It is just that our world has changed. Some people still do beautifully on minimal dosing. Others need more ongoing support.
Why the variation? Because healing is not one size fits all
Every Homeopath considers your sensitivity, your stress, your history, your traumas, your constitution and the state of your vitality. Some choose a minimal approach. Others choose repetition. Both can be correct, depending on the person in front of them.
My approach?
I personally tailor my prescription to the individual - one person may suit a minimal approach - others may need something more consistent. The end goal is the same - to get my client feeling better and as quickly as possible!
The most important part
If you feel seen and supported by your Homeopath, the plan will almost always suit you. And if something does not feel right, it is completely OK to ask. You are allowed to understand the reasoning behind your prescription.
Homeopathy works best when you feel empowered and part of your own healing path.
