Bedwetting: Understanding the root causes with Homeopathy
Natural support for children, teens, and older adults navigating the challenges of bedwetting.
Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, can be an emotional and often hidden stress for families. Whether it’s a young child who hasn’t yet developed bladder control, a teen struggling quietly, or an older person affected by age-related changes, the experience can feel isolating, frustrating, and even shameful.
When I help clients experiencing this, I like to take a deep dive into the person’s entire symptom picture. Bedwetting isn't just about the bladder: it can stem from emotional stress, nervous system imbalance, past trauma, or developmental delays. Homeopathy offers gentle, individualised support that goes deeper than symptoms alone.
What causes bedwetting?
While every person is different, some common underlying causes include:
Immature bladder development in children
Anxiety or fear (especially around school or family changes)
Deep sleep patterns (child simply doesn’t wake up to the urge)
Genetic predisposition
Nervous system weakness or stress
In older adults: urinary tract infections, medications, weakened pelvic muscles, or neurological changes
Homeopathic support for bedwetting
Homeopathy works on an energetic level to gently nudge the body and mind toward balance. These remedies are chosen based on the individual, not just the diagnosis.
The great thing about Homeopathy (well, there’s many great things, but this is ONE of them), is that it’s safe for all ages: from babies, pregnant mothers right through to the elderly and infirm. It’s also non-addictive, does not interfere with other medications and treatments, and works with the body - not against it.
Here are a few commonly used remedies that may help (note these are guidelines only, for a detailed remedy match, please contact me!):
Causticum
For bedwetting in older children or adults who also have weak bladder control during the day. Often suited to people who are sensitive, serious, and may hold in their emotions. Worse in the first part of the night.Sepia
A wonderful remedy for hormonal-related incontinence or bedwetting in older women, especially around menopause. Suited to those who feel overwhelmed, flat, and emotionally distant or overburdened.Kreosotum
Bedwetting in children who soak the bed thoroughly and may even urinate again while asleep. Often used when there’s no awareness of needing to go. Urine may have a strong smell.Lycopodium
For bedwetting in anxious, perfectionist children who may seem confident outwardly but are insecure underneath. Often worse between 4–8 pm and may crave sugar or have tummy upsets.Equisetum
Bedwetting with no other obvious symptoms – just a constant, involuntary dribbling or need to go. Good for both children and elderly with bladder weakness.
When to seek help
While occasional bedwetting can be part of normal development, regular episodes (especially in older children, teens, or adults) may indicate something deeper that deserves attention.
Supportive Cell Salts
For daily nervous system and bladder tone support, I often recommend:
Kali Phos 6x – for nervous tension, anxiety, and emotional fatigue
Ferrum Phos 6x – for inflammation or early stages of infection
Calc Phos 6x – for children growing fast or with developmental delays
Nat Mur 6x – when there's a history of grief or suppressed emotion
If you or your child are dealing with bedwetting, know you're not alone. I’d love to help you find a remedy that fits you, not just the label.
Warmly,
Kirsty x
