Sometimes in Homeopathy, you do everything right and it still doesn’t work.

You take a thorough case. You research carefully. You prescribe the well-indicated remedies. You wait. You follow up. You try again.

And still... nothing.

This is one of those cases. It’s also one of my favourites, because the resolution came not from a textbook, but from looking out a window.

Meet Stan

Stan is a gorgeous dog with a big personality and, for a while, a very unhappy skin situation. He came to me after a nasty flea infestation that had left him scratching constantly: red, inflamed skin, patchy fur, and the kind of relentless itch that makes a dog miserable and an owner desperate.

The fleas had been dealt with. But Stan kept getting worse.

His owner was doing everything right. The house had been treated. Stan was being cared for attentively. But the itching continued, the hair loss was spreading, and nothing was bringing him relief.

The remedies we tried

This was not a case where I reached for one remedy and gave up. We went through the full toolkit.

Pulex Irritans is the flea remedy, made from the flea itself, used in isopathy when flea reactions are driving the symptoms. A natural first port of call. No meaningful response.

Histaminum is for the allergic, hypersensitive reaction. When the body is stuck in a histamine loop and can’t settle. Still nothing.

Sulphur is one of our great skin remedies. Burning, itching, worse for heat, worse for bathing. Sulphur covers a huge range of skin presentations and is often the remedy that finally unlocks a stuck skin case. Stan didn’t budge.

His constitutional remedy (Phosphorus) - the remedy matched to his whole being: his temperament, his patterns, his history. When the constitutional remedy doesn’t move a case, that’s when I really sit up and pay attention. Something is blocking the healing. Something is maintaining the problem.

I asked his owner, more than once: Has anything changed in Stan’s environment recently? New food? New cleaning products? Anything different at home?

Each time, the answer was no.

Because this case had stalled so completely, I decided to visit Stan at home.

Stan’s owner showed me around. I watched him move, checked his skin, noted where he liked to lie, how he held himself, where he gravitated in the garden.

And then I saw it.

If you’ve ever dealt with an aural hematoma in your dog, you know the struggle. One day, your pup is happily flopping their ears around, and the next, they’ve got a swollen, squishy ear that looks like a balloon.

Using Homeopathy to treat Aural Hematoma in dogs:

Hamamelis is amazing for conditions involving blood pooling and weak blood vessels. It helps reduce the size of the hematoma and strengthens capillaries, preventing further bleeding. If your dog’s ear looks dark red or purple and feels warm, this might be the right remedy.

How to use: Try Hamamelis 30C once or twice daily and adjust as needed.

3. Ledum Palustre – For Puncture Wounds and Inflammation

If your dog has an ear hematoma due to an insect bite, a small wound, or repeated trauma from scratching, Ledum can help. It’s great for reducing swelling, preventing infection, and promoting reabsorption of the fluid.

How to use: Ledum 30C once or twice daily should be enough to see results.

4. Belladonna – For Hot, Red, Inflamed Ears

If your dog’s ear is hot to the touch, bright red, and painful, Belladonna is your best bet. This remedy works well for acute inflammation and can bring down the swelling fast. Dogs needing Belladonna might also be restless and sensitive to touch.

How to use: Start with Belladonna 30C up to three times a day and reduce as symptoms improve.

5. Calcarea Fluorica – The Tissue Strengthener

For chronic cases or dogs prone to recurring hematomas, Calcarea Fluorica helps improve elasticity and resilience of the tissues. It strengthens blood vessels and supports long-term healing. This is a great remedy for older dogs or those with weak connective tissues.

How to use: Give Calcarea Fluorica 6X or 12X twice daily for a few weeks to support recovery.

Final Thoughts

Homeopathy can be a game-changer when dealing with aural hematomas but always keep an eye on your pup’s progress. Even with the right remedies, it can still take a few weeks for the swelling and inflammation to go down. In addition to using Homeopathy, I also recommend gently holding an ice pack to the ear, 2-3x a day for the first week or two. It helps with any discomfort and reduces swelling. If the hematoma is large, causing pain, or not improving, consult your vet for additional support. And of course, addressing underlying issues like allergies or ear infections is key to preventing future hematomas.

As a pet owner myself, I know how precious pets are. It can be distressing to both the animal and the owner when a loved pet is stressed and anxious. Aconite

These pets will be over-anxious and over-sensitive to noise and are easily startled. They can become extremely distressed and panic-stricken and feel very vulnerable. This is a great remedy for when their emotions are very intense and are brought on suddenly. An easy way to remember Aconite is fear + fright = Aconite.

Arsenicum

This is a great remedy for those pets who are very anxious, fearful, and insecure. These pets can’t be left on their own as this is very frightening for them. They are quick to panic and need to be reassured. These are the pets that are going to demand attention, but this does nothing to reduce their insecurities.

Phosphorus

This remedy is good for all noise phobias. These are the pets that are going to be very restless, nervous, and fearful. They tend to be sensitive to sudden noises and easily startle and may be fearful of being touched. This remedy is good for all noise phobias.

Lyssin

This is the first remedy to think of if the dog develops or has, a fear of water. It may be to the extreme where the dog will even be scared to drink water, or they get agitated by the sound or sight of water.

Borax

This remedy is specific for fears of thunderstorms, sensitivity to noise, and being easily startled with marked irritability.

Gelsemium

This is a great remedy for fireworks when we see marked trembling especially from a fright. They can be timid, express terror, or be scared after a fright, and fear.

Argentum Nitricum

Argentum Nitricum (or Arg Nit) s a great remedy when the nervous system is affected especially with anxiety and a range or multiple fears.

Rescue remedy – This is a wonderful remedy as an in-between to help settle anxiousness and restlessness and can be easily sprayed into the water bowl or onto their nose.

Dosage guidelines:

I recommend a 30c potency for home prescribing, one every 2-3 hours for an Acute situation (such as fireworks), but stop as soon as symptoms improve.

For other types of anxieties, one pellet once a day for up to three days, but stop as soon as symptoms improve.

How to administer remedies:

A pellet can be given directly to the dog (try to avoid handling the remedies as much as possible), by putting it straight into the dog's mouth or inside the cheek. Alternatively, dissolve the pellet in a little water, and syringe it directly into the dog's mouth.

The third option is to put a pellet into the dog's water bowl, just be aware the dog will be getting a dose each time it has a drink. I recommend removing the bowl after each dose and clean it thoroughly before refilling with fresh water.
